After 13 quarters, smartphone vendor Huawei has returned to the top of the list for the mainland China market, shipping 11.7 million units in the first three months of 2024 and capturing a 17% market share, the technology analyst firm Canalys says, attributing this to the performance of its Mate and nova series.

Apple has grabbed the top spot in global smartphone shipments for 2023, the first time it has done so and also the first time that a company other than Samsung has taken that position since 2010, the technology analyst firms Canalys and IDC report.

Global shipments of smartphones have fallen again in the second quarter, with the technology analyst firm Canalys saying the decline was 11% year-on-year, but providing no numbers. This was the sixth consecutive quarter of decreasing shipments.

Global smartphone shipments fell for a fifth straight quarter in the first three months of 2023, but by 12%, a much better showing than in the final quarter of 2022, the technology analyst firm Canalys says.

Smartphone shipments in China during the third quarter of 2022 increased marginally over the previous three months but, at 70.0 million units, represented a 11% year-on-year fall.

Global smartphone sales fell to 287 million units in the second quarter of 2022, a drop of 9% year-on-year and the lowest figure since the second quarter of 2020 when the pandemic first hit, the technology analyst firm Canalys says.
